Processing Introduction 

The coltan ore (short for columbite-tantalite and known industrially as tantalite).

In Africa, Nigeria is rich in coltan/columbite resources. Columbite deposits occur in Plateau, Kogi, Kano, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Bauchi states, mainly in the placer deposits of cassiterite.

In Africa, miners must upgrade coltan ore to a saleable grade (like 50-60% level) using whatever method, but in recent years, the most common one would be Gravity Concentration combined with magnetic separation. Gravity concentration machines are favored by African coltan miners.

Although coltan ore contains much sticky clay, the raw coltan ore is mostly placer and its properties and composition are simple, so it does not need lots of complicated machines.

Generally, the coltan ore processing plant includes ore washing machines, belt conveyors, gravity separation equipment, vibrating screens, pumps, 3-disc magnetic separators, etc. Commonly used gravity separation machines are 6-S shaking tables, spiral chutes, and jig machines. They are suitable for different particle size ranges.

Those machinery advantages are a high enrichment ratio, large processing capacity, high grade of coltan concentrate, low investment cost, no chemical pollution, and easy dehydration of concentrate powder, which make the tantalum-niobium ore gravity separation plant accepted by more and more African miners.

First, alluvial coltan ore must be washed by a washing machine before separation.

Generally, alluvial coltan/tantalite ore has much mud/sticky clay content, strong viscosity, and fine particle size. Our rotary washing machines can wash it clean and it is easy to lose fine-grained tin ore particles.

After washing, the alluvial coltan/tantalite ore is screened with a vibrating screen/trommel screen.

As the raw material is often mixed with large stones such as waste rocks and pebbles, screening out these useless materials is much more helpful for the next stage of separation work.

Alluvial coltan ore is separated by the gravity separation method.

For alluvial coltan ore with a high degree of monomer dissociation, the final concentrate is obtained by the 6-S shaker tables at one time. The concentrate grade is 50-60% level.

For alluvial tin ore with a low monomer dissociation degree, use a jig machine for primary selection, then concentrate enters 6-s shaking tables for final concentration.

After the coltan ore concentrate is naturally dry under the sun, send them to a 3-disc magnetic separator for final dry separation of the tin, iron, coltan, and other weakly magnetic minerals.
